Hello lovelies, as promised the next two weeks are all about Christmas on the blog, lot of delicious recipes and also crafting ideas. As I mentioned before, we usually don't make material gifts in our family and friends (among the adults), but we love to give each other homemade gifts - made with Love. Most of the times these are edible things, especially from my side - somehow people expect that when you have a Food Blog :-). I have to admit I'm not the biggest crafting talent, but I still always try to have a nice package or special presentation for the things I'm making. So today I'm not only sharing a recipe but also a cute and easy crafting tip (the idea for the jars is from Pinterest).

Crafting Rudolph jar Christmas gifts

I made a super yummy Speculoos and Chocolate Spread with seasonal spices for this years gift - something sweet, since I made a spice mix last Christmas. I also thought this would go so well with the cute Rudolph jars that I decorated with the girls. So here is the recipe:

I used vegan Speculoos, I think it's the most famous brand and should be available worldwide. You can also use less spices than I did, if you don't want that christmassy taste. The spread is wonderful on toast with fresh fruits, with dessert but also just plain with a spoon right out of the jar!

And now the crafting tipp, I have seen similar on Pinterest, and thought they are so cute, easy to make and you don't need many things. So this is perfect for me! You need:

  • brown pipe cleaners

  • brown crepe paper

  • little red balls

  • plastic eyes

  • red Washi-Tape

  • hot glue

I found all of this in my local Hardware store. Cut the crepe paper in stripes according to the size of your jar (you want the middle covered) and glue it to your jar (with regular glue). Put the washi-tape on the lid. Now you have to make the antlers: cut the pipe cleaner in 4 parts, 1 large and 3 smaller ones and fix them with the hot glue. Attach to the lid with the hot glue. Now add the eyes and the nose and your cute Rudolph jars are done.

I really hope I could inspire you a but and maybe you are giving something "Made with Love" this year as well. The spread is really perfect to make with kids and they had lot of fun helping to decorate the jars.

If you love this speculoos chocolate spread, my Christmas kitchen has more edible gift ideas waiting for you: for another creamy spread be sure to try my peanut butter with coconut, for a festive dessert I adore my gingerbread mousse with cherries, and layered into a pretty jar my crunchy chocolate granola makes a lovely present too. I'd be so happy if you give one of them a go.

Yours, Verena

TIPS

Verena's notes

Tip from my kitchen: Stored airtight in the fridge, the spread keeps for 2 to 3 weeks – always use a clean spoon. Both creams also freeze well (about 3 months). For the chocolate cream you can roast and blend almonds or cashews instead of hazelnuts. If you prefer it less spiced, simply reduce the cinnamon and gingerbread spice to taste. Spooned into pretty jars, this spread makes a wonderful edible Christmas gift.

Frequently asked questions

  • Many classic speculoos and caramel coffee biscuits are made without butter or egg, so they happen to be plant-based – it's still worth a quick look at the label. I deliberately use vegan speculoos, which are available almost everywhere. That keeps the whole spread reliably vegan.

  • Stored airtight in the fridge, the spread keeps for about 2 to 3 weeks. Always use a clean spoon so nothing spoils. If you're giving it as a gift, seal the jar well and keep it cool.

  • Yes, both creams freeze well – ideally in a well-sealed jar with a little room at the top. It keeps for around 3 months in the freezer. Simply thaw it overnight in the fridge and stir well before serving.

  • I love it best on fresh bread or toast with a few berries or banana slices. It's also lovely as a topping on porridge, pancakes or waffles, and makes a sweet filling for desserts. And honestly, straight from the jar with a spoon is hard to beat.

  • The spiced speculoos cream and the chocolate hazelnut cream are layered alternately in the jar – it looks pretty and tastes wonderfully varied. You can also make just one of the two creams if you prefer to keep it simple. As a gift from the kitchen, though, the two layers really make an impression.
