Hello lovelies, today I have a fruity summer drink for you that I am loving right now: a blackberry melon refresher with rosemary. So refreshing, so simple – and thanks to blackberries, melon and a hint of rosemary, it looks beautiful too.

And if you like your refreshments on the healthy side, my new green smoothie with spinach, avocado and ginger is my current morning favourite.

Speaking of summer drinks: these days my favourite blender breakfast is a tropical mango pineapple protein smoothie – fruity, dairy-free and ready in five minutes. Another fruity summer sip I am loving lately is my fruit matcha latte with strawberry and mango – layered, vibrant and naturally energising.

But now let me tell you about my new favorite flavour combination at the moment: blackberries (they are ripe in most gardens right now) and cantaloupe melon. Not only do the black and orange go together so perfectly, but the sweet melon and the tart berries are a match made in heaven too.

So I wanted to combine both in a refreshing drink, and since I really like a hint of rosemary in my drinks I thought that would be a great addition – and it turned out delicious. I created the drink together with Sodastream Switzerland*: we really like to drink sparkling water and decided a while ago to give up plastic bottles – just fill the bottle with tap water and add as much fizz as you like. That way you can enjoy the drink either non-alcoholic or as a cocktail, however you fancy.

I hope you will try the blackberry melon refresher with rosemary soon – it is simply wonderfully refreshing in summer. If you are looking for more fruity drinks, you might also love my peach melon iced tea for hot days.

TIPS

Verena's notes

Tip from my kitchen: muddle the blackberries and rosemary only lightly in the glass – that releases their aroma and colour without turning it bitter. The melon purée can be made ahead and chilled; top the drink up with sparkling water or prosecco only just before serving so it stays lovely and fizzy. A few ice cubes and an extra rosemary sprig look pretty in the glass.

Frequently asked questions

  • Both taste wonderful. For the non-alcoholic version and for kids, top the drink up with sparkling water. If you like, turn it into a light summer spritz with prosecco or sparkling wine – then it makes a lovely aperitif.

  • Instead of lime syrup you can mix fresh lime juice with a little maple or agave syrup. Replace the cassis syrup with extra muddled blackberries or blackcurrants and a pinch of sugar. That keeps the drink fruity even without ready-made syrup.

  • A ripe, fragrant cantaloupe or Charentais melon is ideal – it is nicely sweet and smells intense. Watermelon works too, but makes the drink lighter and less creamy.

  • You can make the melon purée a few hours ahead and keep it chilled. Muddle the blackberries and rosemary in the glass only just before serving and then top up with sparkling water or prosecco, so everything stays fresh and fizzy.

  • The fine, resinous note of rosemary balances the sweetness of the melon and the tartness of the blackberries beautifully and makes the drink especially elegant. Muddle the sprig only lightly so it becomes aromatic but not bitter.
