Hello lovelies, if you haven't jumped on the frozen yogurt clusters trend yet, now is the time – these little chocolate-yogurt bites are our summer snack of choice. Creamy yogurt, fresh berries and a coat of chocolate: a dessert can hardly be simpler, and my kids love shaping the clusters themselves.

The base is Greek yogurt, which I stir with a little vanilla and honey. In go finely chopped fresh berries, a few pieces of dried fruit and chopped nuts for crunch. I spoon small mounds onto a baking sheet and into the freezer they go.

Once the clusters are firm, I coat them in melted chocolate with a teaspoon of coconut oil stirred in – that makes the shell glossy and crisp. A few nuts or pieces of dried fruit on top, and the little treat is done.

Best of all: the clusters keep for weeks in the freezer, so there's always a cool snack ready. Let them thaw briefly and the yogurt centre melts on your tongue.

If you love fruity frozen treats, also try my vegan strawberry coconut ice chocolates, the creamy vegan mango and raspberry ice cream and the crunchy chocolate chips with speculoos biscuits.

TIPS

Verena's notes

Tip from my kitchen: use really thick Greek yogurt, then the clusters set nicely and don't spread on the tray. I freeze them through for about 1 to 2 hours before coating them in chocolate – that keeps the shell crisp. Instead of brushing, you can also dip the clusters briefly into the chocolate. They make a perfect snack or a little dessert for hot days and keep for weeks in the freezer.

Frequently asked questions

  • Store them in an airtight container in the freezer, where they keep well for several weeks. Because they are made to be eaten frozen, the freezer is their home – don't leave them at room temperature for long. Let them thaw for just a minute or two before eating so the chocolate softens slightly and the yogurt centre isn't rock-hard.

  • Yes – the yogurt centre softens quickly once out of the freezer, so serve them straight from frozen. The chocolate shell helps them hold their shape for a few minutes, which makes them easy to pick up, but they are not a make-ahead-and-leave-out snack. For a party, take them out in small batches.

  • Yes. Swap the Greek yogurt for a thick plant-based yogurt (coconut, soy or almond – choose one with a Greek-style, spoonable consistency so the clusters hold together), use dark chocolate that is dairy-free, and replace the honey with maple or agave syrup. The method stays exactly the same.

  • A thick, creamy yogurt such as Greek yogurt or skyr works best because it freezes into a firm, scoopable cluster rather than a watery one. Thinner, runnier yogurts spread too much on the tray and can turn icy. If you only have a thinner yogurt, strain it briefly to remove excess liquid first.

  • They are a feel-good treat: Greek yogurt brings protein, fresh berries add fibre and vitamins, and you control the sweetness with just a little honey. They are still a dessert thanks to the chocolate coating, so enjoy them as a lighter sweet snack. Using dark chocolate and dialling back the honey makes them even lighter.
