Hello lovelies, this cherry-lavender iced tea is my favourite for warm summer evenings, when the day is winding down. It brings together two ingredients that help you relax: sour cherries, a natural source of melatonin, and lavender with its calming effect – and I simply love its scent. Combined with a mild herbal tea, it becomes a drink that smells of long evenings in the garden.

It couldn't be simpler to make: brew the tea, let it cool, sweeten with a little maple syrup if you like and add the sour cherries along with their juice. With the lavender, less is more – a few sprigs are plenty, or it quickly turns soapy. My children really loved this one too, by the way.

TIPS

Verena's notes

Tip from my kitchen: let the lavender steep only briefly – that keeps the aroma delicate rather than soapy. I freeze a few sour cherries with their juice into ice cubes, which chills the tea and looks beautiful in the glass. If you like it fruitier, simply add a few more cherries.

Frequently asked questions

  • Sour cherries are one of the few natural sources of melatonin and are often linked to better sleep, while lavender has long been used to calm and relax. Combined with a mild herbal tea, it makes a gentle, caffeine-free drink to wind down with after a long day.

  • Both work. I like jarred sour cherries with no added sugar and pour in the juice too. Frozen sour cherries work just as well and chill the tea further – and fresh pitted cherries in season are wonderful, of course.

  • A mild herbal tea is best, such as a "sleep well" blend with oat herb and linden blossom. Herbal teas are naturally caffeine-free, so the iced tea suits the evening and, in small amounts, works for children too.

  • Less is more: 4 to 5 small sprigs of culinary lavender are plenty for one litre. Too much lavender quickly tastes soapy. Use untreated culinary lavender and let it steep only briefly to keep the aroma delicate.

  • Yes. Chilled, it keeps for 2 to 3 days in the fridge. A pretty trick: freeze a few sour cherries with some juice into ice cubes and drop them into the glass – that keeps the iced tea cold without turning it watery.
