Hello lovelies, today things are turning red and really healthy: my red smoothie is my favorite immune-booster for the cooler months. Beets, carrots, pomegranate, ginger and turmeric go through the juicer, then orange, mango, banana and a spoonful of chia join them in the blender — the result is a power pack full of antioxidants and vitamins.

Beets are one of my absolute favorite smoothie ingredients. I know not everyone likes them, but you really have to try this combination: the ginger gives a pleasant heat and the fruit balances it out with their sweetness.

This recipe is part of 2 Delicious Smoothie Recipes — where you'll also find my creamy green smoothie.

And here's the recipe:

A smoothie to strengthen the immune system

  • 2 beets
  • 5 carrots
  • 1/2 pomegranate
  • 2-3 cm fresh ginger
  • 1-2 cm fresh turmeric
  • 2 oranges
  • 1/2 mango (fresh or frozen)
  • 1 banana (frozen)
  • 1 tsp chia seeds
  • 2-3 leaves basil (optional )
  • ice cubes

Juice the beets, carrots, pomegranate, ginger and turmeric

Add the remaining ingredients and blend into a creamy smoothie

Add ice cubes and water as needed until the desired consistency is reached

  • Hand dropping beetroot into the juicer chute, step
  • Hand feeding carrots into the juicer, red juice in the bowl
  • Hand adding ginger and pepper to the juicer, preparation

You can of course adjust the amount of ginger and turmeric individually to your taste — the more the better, to strengthen your immune system and defenses for the months ahead. And one more little tip: turmeric stains very strongly, so if the blender jug is discolored, just put it in the sun — that removes all the stains.

  • Blender jug full of bright red beet juice, fruit alongside
  • Red juice being poured from the blender into a jar, step

I love not only the vivid color of the smoothie but of course the taste too. The main thing is to blend everything really well, so it turns beautifully creamy with no more chunks — then the whole family enjoys it.

More liquid vitamins

I love this red smoothie incredibly much, and the kids drink it now and then depending on their mood — they've long since discovered their own favorite combinations.

TIPS

Verena's notes

Beets colour and flavour strongly — if you prefer it milder, use one beet less and an extra carrot instead. For extra creaminess I freeze the banana in portions, so I barely need any ice cubes later. One little tip: turmeric stains a lot, so I just set a discoloured blender jug in the sun for a while and the stains disappear. I adjust the amount of ginger and turmeric depending on how much heat I feel like.

GOOD TO KNOW

Frequently asked questions

  • The red smoothie is made from juiced beets, carrots, pomegranate, ginger and turmeric, blended with orange, mango, banana, chia and a little basil into a creamy smoothie.

  • Yes, the smoothie is completely vegan. It contains no animal products at all and is made only from vegetables, fruit, chia seeds and fresh herbs.

  • A juicer makes the smoothie especially smooth, but it isn't a must. You can also blend the beets, carrots and the rest in a high-speed blender with a little water and then strain the smoothie through a fine sieve.

  • You can adjust the amount entirely to taste — the more you add, the stronger and more warming the smoothie gets. For an extra immune kick in the cold season, feel free to use a little more.

  • It tastes best freshly blended. Sealed in the fridge it keeps for about a day — just give it a quick shake before drinking, as the ingredients can settle.
