My Passion for Photography – A Day with the Fujifilm X100V

Hello lovelies, for once today the food isn't in the spotlight, but my passion for photography – a day with the Fujifilm X100V. Photography is creative output for me and a way to give my artistic streak free rein. The time spent cooking, styling, and above all photographing is like meditation for me. Usually, right at the start of the process, I already have a pretty precise picture in my head of what I want to achieve – especially in the food area. The path to that result is the special challenge for me, and it's very fulfilling when you can bring your visions to life.

In the area of landscape or, above all, people photography, I love capturing emotions and memories. Of course my children are one of my favorite subjects. Since my daughters are identical twins, I find it especially exciting to capture their different characters in the pictures – which also often works out well. Since we love to travel, photos are an incredibly beautiful memory for us. The moments and emotions you capture can keep bringing you back to the beautiful places. Fitting for the blog's philosophy: collect moments – not things!

My passion for photography is definitely very great, and I keep learning new things. So of course I was very happy when Fujifilm* asked whether I'd like to test their new camera, the FUJIFILM X100V! Of course I really wanted to! As part of the project we spent a lovely day with the children at the market in Zurich, bought great ingredients, enjoyed the atmosphere around the market and in the city, and afterward cooked something delicious and ate together. And always along for the ride: the FUJIFILM X100V.

It sits incredibly well in the hand and you happily have it with you always and everywhere. Whether strolling through the market, sightseeing, or cooking, the FUJIFILM X100V fits in any jacket pocket and is thus always quickly ready to use.

A Morning at the Market

And so it was at the market too: the prettily arranged fruit, the vegetables, and the lovely spring flowers practically beg to be snapped. I love shots like these, and I have to say, I'm absolutely thrilled with the result. The FUJIFILM X100V has an improved macro mode that lets you get much closer to the subject, and I think the detail shots simply turned out beautifully with it. Or what do you think?

I really can hardly get enough of the pictures and couldn't even decide whether I find the food or the flower pictures more beautiful. You could print them out just like that and hang them at home or use them as postcards.

Cream-colored roses packed into a lush bouquetEspecially with the kids you really often have to be able to react spontaneously, because many beautiful moments pass quickly. If you want to capture them, you should have a camera at hand that's fast and flexible in use, and there the X100V is definitely a good partner. I especially like the preset film simulations; I photographed all day with the "Pro Neg Std" effect, and the pictures here aren't edited anymore either (except the format). I think the pictures turned out really great with the "strong" grain effect and the very special character.

But the camera is not only light and handy, it's robust too, so I have no qualms about putting it in my kids' hands like that. I love discovering the world from their perspective, and it's always exciting which photos they take and which subjects they find beautiful. I can really recommend everyone to introduce the children to the fascination of photography early too, and to discover their angle on their surroundings.

Food Photography

After the market we drove to a great cooking studio, and I prepared 4 seasonal dishes with the purchases from the market. A delicious salad with kale, oranges, fennel, and pomegranate. A delicious lentil-orange soup, a beetroot dip, and, for dessert, a fine silken-tofu-orange cream. You can find the recipes already here on the blog:

And in the studio too, while cooking, plating, and of course enjoying it with friends and family, the FUJIFILM X100V is always along and at hand. Because the lens with a fixed focal length of 23 mm is simply suited to all sorts of subjects. Whether food, family, or landscape. Especially at an open aperture the image is very sharp, and even in poorer lighting conditions the FUJIFILM X100V delivers super results. That simply makes it fun to use. Of course I'll show you a few food pictures too:

I have to say, the FUJIFILM X100V is not only a great companion, it's also a really pretty accessory, or what do you think? In any case, a camera you always want to have with you to capture beautiful moments! We definitely had a wonderful day in Zurich and lots of fun with the camera – and I can speak for big and small there!

A great image video was also created as part of that day, and you can find the whole story of our market day with the camera at Fujifilm Switzerland. An honest update from today's perspective: Fujifilm now officially lists the X100V as "End of Life", the current model of the X100 series is the Fujifilm X100VI, and if you're still looking for the X100V today, you'll mainly find it second-hand. You can read how I got into photography in the first place in my photography story with the Canon EOS M10, and I share more family pictures in our family food shooting.

Love, Verena

GOOD TO KNOW

Frequently asked questions

  • The image quality absolutely convinced me: the fixed 23 mm lens is very sharp even at an open aperture, the camera delivers super results in poorer lighting conditions too, and the preset film simulations like Pro Neg Std give the pictures a very special character; my market photos in this post are unedited apart from the format. Important to know: Fujifilm Switzerland now officially lists the X100V as end of life, so it's no longer sold new. The current model of the series is the X100VI, which is why you'll mainly find the X100V itself on the second-hand market.

  • Besides its classic design, it's above all the handy format: the camera sits incredibly well in the hand, fits in any jacket pocket, and is therefore always quickly ready to use, whether you're strolling through the market, sightseeing, or cooking. Add to that the improved macro mode, which lets you get much closer to your subject, and the film simulations, which give the pictures a special look straight out of the camera. And it's robust; I had no qualms about putting it in my kids' hands to discover the world from their perspective.

  • Yes, for me it really proved itself there. The fixed 23 mm focal length suits all sorts of subjects, whether food, family, or landscape, and especially at an open aperture the image is very sharp. With the improved macro mode you get close enough to details like prettily arranged fruit, vegetables, or the finished, plated dish. After our market visit I prepared and photographed 4 seasonal dishes in the cooking studio, from kale salad to silken-tofu-orange cream, and you'll find the recipes linked here on the blog.

  • Yes. Fujifilm now officially lists the X100V as end of life on its Swiss product page, and the current model of the X100 series is the Fujifilm X100VI, which continues the concept with a fixed 23 mm lens and the classic design. So if you're interested in the X100V, you'll no longer find it new in shops, but mainly second-hand. That doesn't change my everyday verdict: I still really love the pictures from our market day, and that's exactly what this camera was made for.
