Hello Lovelies, I haven't shared a breakfast idea with you for a long time, so here it comes: chocolate overnight oats. Quick and easy to prepare, with just a few ingredients and lot of combination possibilities. I had the delicious autumn version with figs and the last summer berries. Figs and chocolate are an absolutely delicious combination, but you can vary according to your mood. Of course, bananas or any other fruit that you like to eat with chocolate also goes well.

I don't always have the time or muse to prepare a warm porridge in the morning (although it can be done quickly). But then I'm glad when I've thought of the overnight oats in the evening and they're already waiting in the fridge. I already have a version with apple and pumpkin here on the blog, if you prefer that.

The overnight oats are prepared incredibly quickly and in the morning all you have to do is put your desired toppings on them and a healthy breakfast is ready. If you prefer it warm in the morning, you can, for example, put some warm milk foam on the oats, which is also very tasty.

Oats should best be on the menu every day, because they are a very good source of nutrients. They contain fiber, minerals (especially magnesium, phosphorus, iron and zinc) and valuable vitamins. And they are also just super tasty and versatile.

Do you like them so much, do you prefer to eat them as porridge or as overnight oats?

If you like to mix up your mornings and prep breakfast the night before, you will probably also love my apple-cinnamon overnight oats or my basic chia pudding - just like these chocolate oats, both can be made ahead overnight. And if you have a little more time in the morning, my creamy porridge with cashew milk is a cozy warm alternative.

Yours, Verena

TIPS

Verena's notes

Tip from my kitchen: a ratio of about 150 g oats to 400 ml plant milk makes the oats nicely creamy - if you like them looser, just stir in a splash more plant milk in the morning. I let them soak overnight (6–8 hours), or at least 2–3 hours. In a sealed jar they keep for 2–3 days in the fridge, which makes them great for prepping ahead. Vary the toppings however you like: fresh figs, berries, banana, date syrup, coconut yogurt or a spoon of nut butter all pair wonderfully with the chocolate.

Frequently asked questions

  • Ideally overnight, so about 6–8 hours in the fridge. By then the oats and chia seeds have absorbed enough liquid and turned nicely creamy. At a minimum let them soak for 2–3 hours, otherwise they are still too firm.

  • As a rule of thumb i use about 150 g oats to 400 ml plant milk, so roughly 1 part oats to nearly 3 parts liquid. For looser oats add a splash more plant milk in the morning; for firmer ones use a little more oats.

  • Yes, that is exactly what they are made for. Stir everything together in the evening, cover the bowl and chill it, then grab the oats ready-made in the morning. They make a quick breakfast that travels well too.

  • Stored in a sealed jar, the oats keep for 2–3 days in the fridge, so you can stir up a bigger batch and have breakfast ready for several days of meal prep.

  • Fresh figs, berries, banana slices, date syrup, coconut yogurt or a spoon of nut butter all work beautifully. Chocolate pairs with almost any fruit, so feel free to play around and find your favorite combination.
